The Worst Thing

Now I know the worst thing
you can do to someone
is to lead them on

to sing them a song
so beautiful and poignant
that they believe you sing only for them

or take your clever and spirited needle
straight to their heart
and sew an invisible thread
that binds them forever to you

I now
am so broken over you

it feels as if my heart’s been torn in two

and I spend my days
carefully sifting through
the sands of time

searching for grains of truth
in everything you ever said.
